Rep. Philip Agbese,
a member of the Nigerian House of Representatives, says the Pan-African
Parliament (PAP) is making remarkable progress under the leadership of H.E. Hon. Chief Fortune Charumbira.
Agbese, Rapporteur of PAP’s
Committee on Health, Labour and Social Affairs, said he has witnessed
firsthand the significant strides made towards achieving the objectives of the
African Union.
Under
President Charumbira's leadership,
the Nigerian lawmaker said the Parliament has facilitated the effective
implementation of policies and objectives aimed at integrating the African
continent.
He
added that the institution has promoted good governance, human rights,
solidarity, peace, and development while familiarizing the people of Africa
with the policies and objectives of the African Union.
"President Charumbira's mission has
always been about preaching peace, equity, and open arms," Agbese speaking
to journalists at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport on his way out of
the country.
"He
has ensured fairness in the allocation of positions to people across regions in
different committees, rebranding the institution and moving away from colonial
thinking that divided us along linguistic lines.
"During
his tenure, the Pan-African Parliament has introduced 10 model laws in various
sectors, including agriculture and immigration, addressing topical issues like
visas, policing, and cooperation.
"The
President has also established annual youth and women conferences, promoting
democracy, transparency, and accountability.
"Recently,
President Charumbira was re-elected
by members at the Pan-African Parliament headquarters during an election to
fill vacancies in the Bureau, in recognition of his commitment to ensuring the
institution's effectiveness.
"His efforts to secure additional funding for essential parliamentary
functions and operational improvements are commendable.
"Looking
ahead, President Charumbira is
focused on implementing the African Governance Architecture project, funded by
the European Union, aimed at enhancing parliamentary effectiveness and
fostering closer collaboration among member states."
Agbese,
therefore, praised President Charumbira
for his exceptional leadership and vision, which he says has transformed the
Pan-African Parliament into a beacon of hope for African integration and
development.
"His dedication to promoting peace, equity, and good governance is a
shining example for all African leaders," he noted.
"As
we move forward, I pledge my support for President
Charumbira's initiatives and commit to working with him to achieve the
goals of the Pan-African Parliament.
"Together,
we can build a stronger, more united Africa for future generations."
