Johannesburg, South Africa 3 June
2026
Immediate former President of the
Pan-African Parliament, H. E. Chief
Fortune Charumbira, has been conferred with the distinguished African
Royal Award, a prestigious honour recognizing exceptional leadership,
service, and contributions to the advancement of Africa and its people.
The award was presented during a
Special Royal Summit held at the Marriott Hotel in Johannesburg and organized
by the Institute of African Royalty in partnership with the Congress of
Traditional Leaders of South Africa. The summit brought together an eminent
assembly of Kings, Queens, Princes, Princesses, Sultans, and Chiefs from across
Africa’s five regions, underscoring the enduring relevance of traditional
leadership in the continent's governance and development landscape.
The recognition celebrates Chief Charumbira’s distinguished tenure
at the helm of the Pan-African Parliament, where he served as President from
2022 until April 2026, having previously served as one of the institution’s
Vice Presidents. During this period, he became the first traditional leader and
African royal to ascend to one of the highest elected offices within the
institutional architecture of the African Union.
Recognition of a Historic Legacy
Presenting the award, African
traditional leaders hailed Chief
Charumbira’s unwavering commitment to continental unity, parliamentary
diplomacy, and the promotion of traditional institutions as vital partners in
governance and sustainable development.
The African Royal Award is reserved
for individuals whose achievements have made a significant impact on Africa and
who embody the values of integrity, unity, service, and visionary leadership.
In selecting Chief Charumbira for
the honour, traditional authorities acknowledged both his achievements within
the Pan-African Parliament and his broader contribution to elevating the role
of traditional leadership in contemporary African governance.
Speaking on behalf of African
traditional authorities, King Tanyi Tambe Ayuk of Cameroon described the
award as a collective expression of gratitude from traditional leaders across
the continent.
“We are immensely proud of The Mambo
Chief Fortune Charumbira. In
recognition of his monumental contribution and his unwavering commitment to
elevating the institution of traditional leadership, the traditional
authorities of Africa expressed their profound gratitude and spoke with one
voice in honoring his remarkable legacy.”
Similarly, HRH Zolani Mkiva,
Secretary General of CONTRALESA, emphasized the continental significance of Chief Charumbira’s achievements.
“His achievement is not his alone: it
is the success of us all. There is no doubt that The Mambo stands among the
great icons of our continent and beyond, a distinguished leader whose vision,
dedication, and service have brought honor to Africa’s traditional
institutions.”
From Traditional Leadership to
Continental Statesmanship
Chief
Charumbira’s leadership journey is unique within
Africa’s political and governance landscape. A traditional leader from
Zimbabwe, he has served as President of the National Council of Chiefs since
2005 and has also played an active role in Zimbabwe’s legislative processes as
a parliamentarian and senator. His leadership at both national and continental
levels has positioned him as one of Africa’s most prominent advocates for the
integration of traditional institutions into modern governance frameworks.
His election as President of the
Pan-African Parliament in 2022 marked a historic milestone not only for
Zimbabwe but also for traditional leaders across Africa. It signaled growing
recognition that indigenous governance systems and traditional authorities
continue to have an important role in shaping the continent’s future.
Throughout his tenure, Chief Charumbira consistently advocated
for greater African unity, stronger parliamentary engagement in continental
affairs, and enhanced collaboration between traditional institutions and modern
state structures. Under his leadership, the Pan-African Parliament expanded its
parliamentary diplomacy efforts and strengthened engagement with regional and
international partners.
Celebrating the Role of Traditional
Institutions
The Special Royal Summit also served
as a platform to reaffirm the continuing relevance of traditional institutions
in promoting peace, preserving cultural heritage, strengthening social
cohesion, and advancing sustainable development across Africa.
Participants highlighted the unique
role that traditional leaders play in connecting governance structures with
grassroots communities, particularly in rural areas where customary
institutions remain influential in conflict resolution, land administration, and
community development.
In this context, the honour bestowed
upon Chief Charumbira was widely
viewed as recognition not only of an individual leader but also of the broader
contribution of traditional authorities to Africa’s governance architecture.
An Inspiration for Future
Generations
The conferment of the African Royal
Award adds another significant accolade to Chief
Charumbira’s public service career and reinforces his standing as one of
the continent’s leading traditional and political figures.
For many participants at the summit,
the recognition symbolizes the growing convergence between traditional
leadership and continental governance institutions. It also serves as an
inspiration to emerging African leaders who seek to combine respect for cultural
heritage with a commitment to modern governance, democratic representation, and
continental integration.
As Africa continues its pursuit of the aspirations of Agenda 2063, the honour accorded to Chief Fortune Charumbira stands as a testament to the enduring value of visionary leadership, service to the people, and unwavering commitment to the African ideal of unity, prosperity, and self-determination.
