The
House of Peoples’ Representatives of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia
has announced the election of Hon. Mrs.
Lomi Bedo Kumbi and Hon. Dr. Ashebir
W. Gayo as members of the Ethiopian Parliament’s delegation to the Pan African Parliament (PAP).
This
was contained in a letter dated January 30, 2022 and addressed to the Clerk of
the Pan African Parliament by the
Speaker of the Ethiopian Parliament, Rt.
Hon. Tagesse Chafo.
Hon. Mrs. Lomi Kumbi is the current
Deputy Speaker of the Parliament while Hon.
Dr. Gayo a ranking member of the Ethiopian Parliament has previously served
as a member of PAP.
Hon. Dr. Gayo served as Vice
President representing the Eastern Regional Caucus of PAP in the Fourth parliament from May 2015 to May 2018. His election is therefore
a welcome development considering the
high turnover of PAP
parliamentarians with the resultant loss of institutional memory which has
adversely affected the parliament.
It
would be recalled that Ethiopia’s parliamentary election was conducted in June
2021 necessitating the election of the a new delegation to PAP as required by the Protocol establishing the Pan African Parliament.
