Afenifere reacts to Buhari’s travel ban on some Nigerians

Yinka Odumakin
The Yoruba socio-cultural organisation, Afenifere, has rubbished the Executive Order 6 signed by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Afenifere said the travel ban placed on some prominent Nigerians was the beginning of absolute dictatorship in the country.

Buhari’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, had disclosed that no fewer than 50 persons have been placed on a travel ban by the Administration.
Shehu also disclosed that those on the watch list were not allowed to sell their assets worth 50 million.

However, the spokesperson of Afenifere, Yinka Odumakin said Buhari was usurping the powers of the courts.

Speaking with ThisDay, Odumakin stated that if allowed, any Nigerian whom the government considers a threat can become a victim of the ban.
“It is only the court that has such powers. This is uncalled for because it allows for abuse. Clearly what they have done is wrong. It is a descent into dictatorship.

“How can you own property abroad and pay taxes on it in Nigeria?

“Who among the inner caucus of the government is not guilty of owning property abroad? Let’s wait and see. The government is about to shoot itself in the foot,” he said.
