The
Pan-African Parliament (PAP) and the African Union (AU) Department for
Political Affairs, Peace and Security (PAPS) will produce a Joint Workplan
which outlines peace and security areas of collaboration and a clear roadmap to
achieving set targets. This was the key resolution of the meeting held at the
AU Headquarters on Wednesday between the two parties. The workshop aimed at
brainstorming and adopting a roadmap, which will pave the way for a stronger
partnership, will be held on the margins of the Sitting of the Permanent
Committees of the PAP in March 2023.
The
intertwined mandates of the PAP and the PAPS have compelled the two AU
institutions to explore a complementarity mechanism to promote peace and
stability, good governance, democracy and human rights as a foundation for
inclusion, security and the development of the continent and its people.
The
delegations led by H.E. Hon. Chief
Fortune Charumbira, President of
the PAP and H.E. Amb. Bankole Adeoye,
Commissioner for PAPS have held several engagements since the election of a new
PAP Bureau in June 2022. These consultations have already yielded palpable
results.
One
of the key areas of collaboration over the past few years between the PAP and
PAPS has been the African Union Election Observation Missions (AUEOM). As part
of the collaborative framework, the Continental Parliament is expected to play
a role in unconstitutional changes of government, women’s participation in
political processes and the peace process in the Tygray among other areas.
