Members
of the Bureau of the Pan-African Parliament (PAP) led by the President, H. E. Hon. Chief Fortune Charumbira continued
their stakeholder engagement process ahead of the African Union (AU) Summit
with a courtesy call on Prof. Pierre
Moukoko Mbonjo, Head of the AU Reform Implementation Unit. The aim of the
visit was to seek an update on the Institutional Reform process currently
underway at the AU.
In
2016 African leaders decided that Institutional Reforms of the African Union
(AU) was urgent and necessary given the role the AU is expected to play in
driving and achieving Africa’s Agenda 2063 vision of inclusive economic growth
and development. In order to implement the reform, five main areas are at the
center of the discourse: Focusing on fewer priority areas with continental
scope, Institutional Realignment, Connecting the AU with African Citizenry,
Management of AU at the political and operational levels and Sustainable
Financing of AU programmes.
The
mandate of the PAP and its place within the AU architecture will be clarified
during this reform process. Prof Moukoko
Mbonjo emphasized that the AU’s objective to connect with African citizens
makes the Continental Parliament a key priority as the continental institution
embarks on a journey to redefine its trajectory. The PAP Bureau was assured
that the process is now fully underway and a consultation between the PAP and
the Reform team is expected in March this year.
