The five Regional
Caucuses of the Pan African Parliament
(PAP) will meet on Tuesday to nominate candidates who will stand for
election to fill the vacant positions of president and four vice presidents.
According to the
continental parliament’s rules of procedure, for the position of vice
president, each regional caucus will nominate two candidates (a male and a
female) who will stand for election on May 27.
This was disclosed
on Monday by the Acting President of PAP,
Hon. Chief Fortune Charumbira while adjourning the opening session of the
Fourth Ordinary Session of the Fifth Parliament.
Chief Charumbira further disclosed that under the rules, a
region can either nominate candidate for either the post of president or vice
but not both.
The implication of
this is that the Western and Eastern regional caucuses where parliamentarians has
indicated interest to contest for both the presidential and vice presidential
positions will now have to make a very difficult choice.
The three
candidates that have indicated interest to contest the presidential position
are from the Southern, Western and Eastern Regional Caucuses.
While the Southern
Regional Caucus has indicated interest in the presidential position only, and
has endorsed the Acting President Hon.
Chief Fortune Charumbira, the same
cannot be said of the Western and Eastern Caucuses where parliamentarians have
also indicated interest to contest the vice presidential position.
The regional
caucuses are also expected to elect their various chairpersons, vice
chairpersons and rapporteurs. The caucuses will also nominate members for the eleven
(11) permanent committees who will then elect the leadership of the various
committees.
