Hon. Chief Fortune Charumbira |
The Pan African
Parliament (PAP) on Wednesday, adopted a motion to pay tribute to the late
former President of Zimbabwe, His Excellency,
Robert Gabriel Mugabe moved by Hon.
Jaynet Kabila and seconded by Hon.
Haidara Aichata Cisse and Hon.
Jacquline Amongin.
Moving the motion, Hon. Kanila recalled that the late Robert Mugabe was a fervent Pan
Africanist who defended his country in particular and Africa in general on the
world stage. “This is an honour well deserved as a legend in the African
continent. We need to celebrate his memories as a Pan Africanist who is well
deserving of the honour” said Kabila.
“He loved his
country and declared education as a fundamental right which has placed Zimbabwe
as one of the countries with the highest literacy rate in Africa”.
Seconding the
motion, Hon. Jacqueline Amongi noted
that the late Mugabe not only brought independence to Zimbabwe but became the source
of inspiration to all the other African countries who were struggling for
emancipation from white minority rule such as Namibia and South Africa.
Supporting the
motion, the Fourth Vice President of PAP, Hon.
Chief Fortune Charumbira who is a Senator from Zimbabwe, stated that he was
“humbled by the contributions of members” who spoke in support of the motion,
especially the sponsor, Hon. Jaynet
Kabila and the two parliamentarians that seconded the motion, all of whom
he noted, are not even from Zimbabwe. Charumbira
noted that the late Mugabe supported and encouraged women participation in
both politics and business and then called on the United States of America,
Britain and the European Union to immediately lift the economic sanctions imposed on
Zimbabwe.
After the motion
was unanimously adopted, the President of the Parliament, Hon. Roger Nkodo Dang then announced that Committee Room 2 is
hereby named after Mugabe.
