A delegation of the Pan-African
Parliament (PAP), led by the President Rt. Hon. Roger Nkodo DANG, has
arrived in Azerbaijan to attend the 18th Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Summit of Heads of State and Government scheduled for 25-26 October
in Baku. The two other members of PAP delegation are Hon. Julius MALEMA from
South Africa and Hon. Rose Marie BANGURA from Sierra Leone.
According to a statement by Jeffrey ONGANGA, PAP Media Officer, over 150 countries and
international organizations have registered for this year’s summit which will
also be attended by foreign ministers and other senior representatives.
The Non-Aligned Movement
(NAM) is the biggest forum for political coordination and consultation after
and within the United Nations. At least 120 Member States from the developing
world subscribe to the organization while 17 countries and 10 International
Organizations are observers.
“As law-makers for the
continent, we are keen on this summit because it promises a big paradigm shift
in a number of key factors to which our countries seek to find solutions. We
therefore look forward to dialogue around peace and security, human rights
promotion and preservation of multilateralism,” says PAP President Hon. Nkodo Dang.
NAM was set up to unite
countries which did not join any military-political blocs during the Cold War
and has been transformed into one of the important multilateral mechanisms. To
date, it is the second political platform after the United Nations.
