Youth Council fixes date to elect new leadership

The National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) has slated Gombe State as host of its forthcoming general congress with no less than 104 affiliated organisations considered eligible for the contest.

The Acting President of NYCN,  Mr Chinedu Enujeko, who was former Deputy President of the council, said this during a media briefing in Abuja on Friday.

Enujeko said the management committee of the NYCN agreed that Gombe should be the host state of the forthcoming congress, which is scheduled from July 19 to 23.

He said the congress, which was to hold earlier was delayed following the indefinite suspension of the president of the council, Mr Murtala Gamji.

Enujeko,  however, said that the suspended president failed to deliver on the mandate, and therefore was suspended indefinitely following a resolve by the ministry and the management of the council.

“As former deputy president of NYCN,  Murtala and I were over aged but we were called as experienced council members to organise election in six months with funds released to conduct the process but unfortunately the process was thwarted by the erstwhile president.

“A management meeting of the NYCN was summoned following a resolve by the ministry and a vote of no confidence was passed on the National Transition Committee (NTC).

“The vote of no confidence on Gamji was ratified to give way for  credible elections and as former Deputy,  I was given 11 days to complete the process of conducting the elections,” he explained.

Enujeko, who lamented that the council had been marred by the several situations it went through, promised to conduct a free and fair congress to enable the council embark on development programmes.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Minister of Youths and Sports Development, Mr Solomon Dalung in January collapsed all factions in the council and instituted a transition government with six months mandate to pilot affairs of the council and conduct a free and fair election.
