Hon. Dr. Fatimetou Habib of Mauritania has been elected as the First Vice
President of the Pan-African Parliament (PAP), succeeding Hon.
Prof. Massouda Mohamed Laghdaf, who recently assumed the role of Minister
of Employment and Vocational Training in Mauritania. Dr.
Habib, a respected gynecologist and influential figure in Mauritanian
politics, received overwhelming support, securing 96 out of 100 votes cast.
Dr. Habib, who also
serves as the Fourth Vice President of Mauritania’s National Assembly, brings a
wealth of experience to the Pan-African Parliament. She is widely recognized as
an advocate for peace and development, with a particular focus on diplomatic
relations and social welfare. Her involvement with the Mauritania-Mali
Parliamentary Friendship Group highlights her commitment to fostering
cross-border dialogue and cooperation. Within the PAP, she has contributed
extensively as a member of the Committee on Health, Labour, and Social Affairs,
working to address key health and labor issues across the continent.
Though Dr.
Habib was the sole candidate for the position, the PAP’s Rules of
Procedure required a formal election process to affirm the appointment. Her
election marks a continued commitment to ensuring leadership stability within
the PAP as it works to advance socio-political initiatives across Africa.
In her new role as First Vice President, Dr.
Habib is expected to play a significant part in driving the agenda of
the PAP, particularly in areas concerning health, labor, and social
development. Her appointment underscores a strong representation of women in
African leadership, as she joins a growing cohort of female leaders dedicated
to advancing the welfare of African citizens.
An elated Dr. Habib expressed her gratitude to the PAP members for their confidence and pledged to work tirelessly toward promoting unity and progress. She emphasized her commitment to strengthening the PAP’s role in addressing issues that impact Africans on a daily basis, from healthcare challenges to labor rights.
