Two
of the candidates who had been nominated to contest from the offices of the
First and Fourth Vice Presidents have withdrawn from the race.
In
the Northern Region, Hon. Prof. Massouda
Mohamed Laghdaf and Hon. Abdessalam
Homa both from Mauritania won the nomination to contest for the position of
First Vice President. However, we have reliably gathered that Hon. Abdessalam Homa has withdrawn from
the race, leaving the incumbent Hon.
Prof. Massouda Mohamed Laghdaf as the sole candidate for the position of
First Vice President.
In
the Central Region, Hon. Djidda Mahamat from
Chad and Hon. Anita Ndayizeye from
Burundi were nominated to contest the position of Fourth Vice President.
However, we have also reliably gathered that Hon. Anita Ndayizeye has withdrawn from the race, leaving Hon. Djidda Mahamat as the sole candidate for the position of
Fourth Vice President.
So
the PAP election tomorrow will have three candidates for the three positions
with Hon. Chief Fortune Charumbira contesting
also as the sole candidate for President.
Although
sole candidates, each of the candidates must secure a simple majority of the
votes cast for their respective offices to emerge victorious.
Under
the Rules of the Parliament, the Five (5) member Ad Hoc Committee will organize
and preside over the election of the President. The elected President will now
preside over the election of the First and Fourth Vice President.
