Frontline
politician and former Secretary to the Imo State Government, Rt. Hon. Uche Onyeagucha has declared
his intention to run to represent Imo East Senatorial District at the National
Assembly in the year 2023 under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party
(PDP).
His
declaration was made through a video which has gone viral.
A
lawyer and former member of the House Of Representatives (2003 – 2007), Onyeagucha is from Obinze in Owerri
West Local Government Area of Imo State.
“I
use this medium to humbly announce that I have decided to run to represent Imo
East Senatorial District in the year 2023”.
“I am
running this race with every sense of responsibility and accountability to Ndi
Owerre Zone and Ndi Igbo at large. I seek your support and endorsement as I
embark on this journey”
Onyeagucha noted that in
recent years, “we have been faced with problems of insecurity, failed economy,
and secessionist agitations”.
Reacting
to the declaration, a political leader from Ogwa in Mbaitoli Local Government
Area, Ben Emekowa who was elated at
the declaration, described Onyeagucha
as “another Abaribe in the Upper
Chamber of the National Assembly. The kind of Senator we want”.
It
would be recalled that Onyeagucha
was a member of the Imo State Caucus at the House of Representatives that
facilitated the Federal Government takeover of Alvan Ikoku College of Education
in 2005.
Along
with former Governor HE Emeka Ihedioha,
late Bethel Amadi, Geff Ojinika,
Patricia Udogu and others, the 2003 - 2007 Imo Caucus worked assiduously to
secure approval for the nearly one billion Naira initial funding that ensured
the Federal Government takeover of Alvan Ikoku College of Education.
The
funding made it possible for the College to renovate dilapidated structures,
build large classrooms, laboratories and hostels and expanded the staff
strength.
It is
also on record that then Imo State Caucus facilitated the transfer of the Owerri
axis of Onitsha – Owerri expressway rehabilitation and reconstruction to Julius Berger, a move that resulted in
the rapid completion of the project.
Noted
for being very outspoken on critical national issues, Onyeagucha will if elected, fill the vacuum that will be created by the
decision of Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe
to contest for the governorship of Abia State.
