The All Progressives Congress (APC) has spoken on the gale of
announcements of consensus candidates for electives positions ahead of
the 2019 election.
In the past two weeks, APC state governors, party leaders and other
stakeholders, have declared support for one aspirant or the other as the
primaries draw nearer.
The development has caused uneasy calm in some chapters, with some members threatening to work against the party.
Also, the adoption of indirect primaries in some states, is another situation the APC is battling with.
On Tuesday, the party said decisions on consensus candidates was subjective and not final.
A statement by APC national publicity secretary Yekini Nabena, made
clarifications to enlighten party faithful on the procedure for
nominating candidates.
It said while consensus is provided for by the Party’s Constitution, the option is conditional.
“Consensus does not foreclose Direct or Indirect Primaries for all
elective positions as contained in the resolution of the 6th meeting of
the Party’s National Executive Committee (NEC).
“Again, consensus will apply when no other aspirant signify interest
(i.e. through purchase of nomination forms) for the position in
question”, Nabena added.
