The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has reportedly frozen the accounts of the Akwa Ibom and Benue State Government.
It was gathered that the anti-graft agency gave the orders on Wednesday without giving any reason for its actions.
Reacting to the development, Comrade David Akpan, National Secretary,
PDP National Defenders, said the action was a deliberate ploy to
unconstitutionally starve Akwa Ibom state of resources.
Akpan said, “Our attention has been drawn to an illegal freeze of the
account of the government of Akwa Ibom state by agent of the federal
government.
“We greet this development as a brazen affront on the people and
government of Akwa Ibom state and a slap to Nigeria’s democracy.
“We interpret this action as a deliberate ploy to unconstitutionally
starve Akwa Ibom state of resources to aid ongoing development across
the state. We interpret this as a ploy to sabotage the efforts of
Governor Udom Emmanuel and his government in order to demoralise him and
the administration.
“We, therefore, call on Nigerians to join hands in solidarity with
the people of Akwa Ibom state to condemn this illegality and demand for
immediate lifting of the frozen order.
“Furthermore, we appeal to the National Assembly and the
international community to step in and save Nigeria’s democracy from
being overrun by dictators in suits and agbada.”
