A
delegation of the Pan-African Parliament (PAP), led by its President, H.E. Hon. Chief Fortune Charumbira, has
arrived in Nairobi, Kenya to participate in the Fifth Mid-Year Coordination
Meeting (5th MYCM) of the African Union (AU), the Regional Economic Communities,
the Regional Mechanisms and the African Union Member States on the 16th July
2023.
The
meeting is convened under the AU theme of the year 2023 “Acceleration of
African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Implementation” and will be
preceded by the 43rd Ordinary Session of the Executive Council, scheduled to
take place from the 13th to 14th of July 2023.
The
Mid-Year Meeting is expected to consider the following, among other issues:
*
Presentation and discussion on the status of continental integration in Africa
in accordance with the Abuja treaty
*
Presentation and discussion on the status of regional integration
*
Presentation and discussion on the draft report of the AU institutional reform
*
Presentation on the division of labour among Member States, RECs/RMs and AU
*
Presentation of the 10-year implementation plan of Agenda 2063.
As
part of preparatory engagements before the Meeting, the PAP President will join
other Heads of AU Organs for a strategic review workshop of the African
Governance Architecture (AGA) on the 12th.
As
the operationalization of AGA passes the ten-year mark, the workshop is an
opportune time to look back, take stock of the achievements and challenges that
AGA has faced and draw lessons to inform and influence the work of AGA over the
next ten years. Thus, the first statutory Meeting of the African Governance
Platform, which was held alongside the 36th Ordinary Session of the AU Assembly
held from 13-14 February 2023 in the AU HQ Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, decided to
convene a Strategic Reflection for the Platform Members and stakeholders.
