Deputy
Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC), H.E. Dr. Monique Nsanzabaganwa, held a working session with the
Bureau of the Pan-African Parliament (PAP), led by H.E. Chief Fortune Charumbira. The meeting took place at the seat
of the Continental Parliament in Midrand, South Africa.
The
consultation formed part of the ongoing engagements between the PAP leadership
and the AUC to enable the Parliament to effectively deliver on its mandate
through allocation of adequate resources. This is a critical requirement in the
PAP Bureau’s efforts to “revive, renew, reposition, and reinvigorate” the
institution.
The
meeting covered various issues including the PAP budget; the role of the
Parliament in the African Union architecture; ongoing staff recruitment
process; status of Pan-African Parliamentarians; and the Bureau operational
effectiveness.
H.E.
Dr. Monique Nsanzabaganwa is in charge of Administration and Finance and
assists the Chairperson of the AUC in the execution of his functions to ensure
the smooth running of the Commission, and acts as the Chairperson in his
absence.
The
Pan-African Parliament is gearing up for the Second Ordinary Session of the
Sixth Parliament next month. The Bureau is working to ensure that all the
necessary measures and facilities are in place when Pan-African
Parliamentarians convene to discuss solutions to the issues facing the
continent. The Session is expected to open on 15 May 2023.
