The
Senatorial Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for Imo East
Senatorial District in the February 2023 parliamentary elections in Nigeria, Hon. Barr. Uche Onyeagucha has called
on the current leadership of Imo State House of Assembly to immediately recall
Rt. Hon. Barr Okey Onyekamma, member representing Mbaitoli State Constituency
who was suspended since November last year.
This
was contained in a press release issued on Friday by Prince MacDonald Enwere, Special Assistant to Hon. Onyeagucha.
Hon. Onyeagucha noted that the
suspension of Hon. Okey Onyekamma by
the State House of Assembly “was the height of legislative rascality and brazen
display of illegality which must be vehemently condemned at all times”.
“It
is indeed, ludicrous and unacceptable for the State Assembly to continue to
deny the people of Mbaitoli state constituency representation”, he added.
“Although,
we are not ignorant of the fact that the illegal suspension of Hon. Okey Onyekamma by the State House
of Assembly is akin to the proverbial saying that "when a masquerade
dances on the roof top of a building without missing its steps, the man behind
the mask cannot but be a Carpenter".
Hon Onyeagucha therefore, condemned
in “the strongest terms the draconian, strong-arm and headmasterist influence
of Governor Uzodimma over the leadership of the House. Members of the present
House should be ashamed of themselves for allowing Governor Uzodimma to
continue to use them as 'rubber stamp'. We cannot continue to massage such act
of illegality, lawlessness and gangsterism which the State Assembly has been
known for since the inception of Senator
Uzodimma's regime” said Hon.
Onyeagucha.
He
therefore called on the good people of Mbaitoli State Constituency to rise and
demand for the immediate and unconditional recall of their Representative, Hon. Barr. Okey Onyekamma.
Lending
his voice to the call, a political leader from Afara/ Eziama Obiato ward in
Mbaitoli Local Government, Nze Uchenna
Okoronkwo described the suspension as an act of lawlessness and wondered
how the All Progressives Congress (APC) still expects the people of Mbaitoli to
vote for the party in the next election. “The same constituency you suspended
their House member for no reason?. We are watching”.
In her reaction, a prominent woman leader and former special assistant to former Governor Emeka Ihedioha on Women Mobilization, Hon. Edith Nwachi commended Hon. Onyeagucha for speaking out against the injustice and called on leaders to see this as an affront to the political leadership in Mbaitoli.
