The
controversy surrounding the holding of elections into the Bureau of the Pan African Parliament (PAP) has
finally been settled by the Bureau of the Heads of States and Government of the
African Union (AU).
The Bureau
of the Assembly which took the decision in a meeting today, further directed
that the elections should be conducted in Midrand, South Africa which is the
seat of the Parliament, observing the principle of rotation in the election of
the President of the Parliament.
It
would be recalled that the African Union Commission (AUC) had in its last report
to the Permanent Representatives Committee, indicated that the election will
take place in May.
This
decision of the Assembly which is the supreme organ of the AU has conclusively
settled the crisis that led to the suspension of parliamentary activities at
the continental parliament.
The
implication is that the Assembly decision today has affirmed previous decisions
of the 39th Ordinary of the Executive Council on the issue of
rotation and venue for the session.
We therefore
call on all parliamentarians to see this as a victory for all and the rule of
law. The fighting is over and we urge all the MPs to once more, work as a team
in the interest of the continent.
