The
member representing Mbaitoli state constituency at the Imo State House of
Assembly, Rt. Hon. Okey Onyekanma,
has donated the sum of three million six hundred thousand Naira (N3.6 million)
as micro grant to women in twelve communities in Mbaitoli local government area
of Imo state.
Onyekanma
made the donations during year 2020 - 2021 August meetings in different
communities in Mbaitoli local council area.
Speaking
during the occasion of August meeting of Afara Women Development Union, Onyekanma said that the gesture was to
support petty traders and boost their capacities, especially this period of
economic downturn.
"The
money is strictly for petty traders. It has been my plan to support them. We
know that when you empower women, you have empowered an entire society.
"This
is my commitment to supporting hardworking petty traders who have no financial
capacity to grow their businesses," the lawmaker explained.
While
Amaocha Afara, Obazu, Alaenyi Ogwa, Isi Orodo, Obi Mbieri, Achi Mbieri,
Amawuihe, Isi Ogwa women organizations received the sum of three hundred
thousand naira from Onyekanma in the past, Amaike Mbieri, Idume Ogwa and Afara
women associations received theirs last week.
Onyekanma
insisted that he would extend the gesture to other communities in Mbaitoli, in
the coming years.
