The Authority of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West Africa States (ECOWAS) will on Thursday hold an Extraordinary Summit on the socio-political situation in Mali.
This was contained in a statement on Wednesday in Abuja by the
Directorate of Communications of the ECOWAS Commission.
The summit which would be held virtually through video
conference became necessary following the military coup d’etat that took place
in the Republic of Mali on Tuesday.
It would be recalled that President Ibrahim Keita and his
government resigned after soldiers arrested him. The Parliament has also been dissolved
with the soldiers setting up a body to work out modalities for elections.
However, the African Union (AU) and ECOWAS have all strongly
condemned the undemocratic change of government, adding that it is against
their protocols on Democracy and Good Governance.
The Authority of ECOWAS Heads of State and Government had tried
to mediate in the socio-political crises and sent several mediation and peace
missions to Mali.
Meanwhile, ECOWAS has also closed borders of its member
states’ with Mali and suspended the country.
